Visit Notes

Sunday, 1st May 2005

After being fully satisfied for the day by my trip to Devenish (County Fermanagh) and White Island (County Fermanagh) I decided to head for home. On the way I passed a sign for 'Cassidy Ancient Rath', so I decided to take a detour and check it out.

When you finally find the site (despite it being signposted) it is a bit disappointing. The best bit of the visit was the walk through the bluebell carpeted wood.

The rath is very well defined with banks 2m high on the outside. The inside is raised up so that the bank is 1m above the floor. Sadly the interior of the rath is wooded and the banks are very thick with thron trees making it difficult to appreciate it properly.

The rath is signposted from the B82 about one mile north of Kiladeas. The thrid and last signpost is missing though so keep a lookout for two metal poles on the righthand side of the road without a sign. Opposite this is a soggy path through the woods. Follow this path until you reach a style. You are then at the rath.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
