Faughart Lower : Passage Tomb

By some fluke I called into the bungalow of the landowner to ask about access for this monument. He was very gracious and gave me directions to the tomb. He played down the monument a bit, saying that it wasn't much, but I think he just didn't want me to be too disappointed. The remains aren't exactly spectacular, but if this is the remains of a passage tomb then its very presence here is important.
Personally, I'm not too sure that it is the remains of a passage tomb - it could easily be the remains of a wedge tomb. As the monument is embedded into a field boundary it is very hard to tell, though.
The chamber runs through the bank and is accessible from both sides of the hedge. Two large slabs (2m+ long) run through the bank and support a large slab that covers the whole space. There are several other stones at either end of the chamber and the bank contains many large stones that could have come from the structure originally.
The farmer told me that archaeologists did investigate the fields around the site at some time, but didn't really find anything.

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide. Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate. Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies. The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out. UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system. ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps. |
