Visit Notes

Monday, 25th October 2004

It's hard to picture a more idyllic spot. This well is situated just 150m from the west shore of Killala Bay, where the Atlantic Ocean crashes in below.

The well is covered by a small stone hut and is inside a small enclosure along with two small cairns. A sign on the wall gives details of the pattern that must be performed here as part of the ritual of taking the water.

This involves kneeling at the well and praying, followed by walking around the well three times. Then the same ritual is performed at each of the cairns. Finally it is back to the well where prayers are said kneeling and then three circuits of the enclosure are made before sipping the water.

Once again the views east over the water towards Knocknarea (County Sligo) blew me away! We spent over an hour here just watching the sea and the fools surfing a few hundreds metres along the bay. This might be a remote part of the country, but an effort should be made to come here if you're close by.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
